A doublebill of theatre and dance pieces

A double bill of devised dance and theatre pieces

“Second Nature” & “The Silly Little Girl and the Funny Old Tree

that is not Funny Old Girl and Silly Little Tree.”

Date: 28th and 29th March 2009

Time: 8pm

Venue: Republic Polytechnic Cultural Centre Laboratory

Tickets at $18 Each.

Contact ISAAC at 98160360 or isaac.sim@nus.edu.sg for the purchase of tickets.

Second Nature

Second Nature was created for and first staged during the 2009 NUS Arts Festival in response to the festival’s theme, ‘Arts and Environment.’ Choreographed by Kiran Kumar is a devised dance piece derived from a collaborative process between three different performers: two dancers from different dance traditions and training and an actor who has none. It finds resonances of issues pertinent to environment – of conservation, preservation, regeneration, sustainability and pollution within the nature of dance. By exploring the interaction and crossing of boundaries between personal environments; environments of accumulated, acquired behaviour, that with frequent repetition, seep so deep into personal memory as to seem traditional, innate, second nature.

The Silly Little Girl and the Funny Old Tree that is not Funny Old Girl and Silly Little Tree

A work-in-progress very loosely based on Kuo Pao Kun’s, “Silly Little Girl and Funny Old Tree.” You will experience awkward moments that the performers will face as they put together directors’ choices and conventions with limited resources to stage this play. No matter what, the ‘show must go on!’ Experience then the snippets of Singapore theatre history as they venture into the possibilities of putting up the show that will be uniquely Singapore.

DEVISED THEATRE WORKSHOP

conducted by THESPIS-Theatre Studies Society
Date: 22nd Sep 08. Monday.
Venue: LT13
Time: 1pm-4pm

Devised Theatre Workshop: is misleading. Let us take three hours to think of how theatre can be devised in a workshop. Or, how theatre is devised. Or, how you can workshop devised theatre. Or how devised is theatre. Or let us just play games – with theatre, on theatre, without theatre, about theatre? You decide.

But if you want instructions:

1. Be yourself – if you can.
2. Eat before you come.
3. Dress comfy. You’re going to move…differently.
4. Bring your glasses or contacts.
5. Bring yourself
6. Bring your favourite random item. Preferably a personal one with some childhood memory of it.
7. Bring a story book

NOTE: Please do read the play ‘The Silly Little Girl and The Funny Old Tree’ by Kuo Pao Kun before attending the workshop. The text may be found in the Central Library.

The workshop will be facilitated by Alvin Lim, a NUS postgrad student and Thespis member.

We also request that you email your attendance to thespis.tssoc@gmail.com
visit http://nusthespis.wordpress.com   for information about the society.

If you have yet to join Thespis or missed our welcome tea, the workshop is a great oppurtunity for you to meet us and find out abit more about our activities. This will be our last open event as membership will be a requirement to attend future Thespis events so hope to see you there!

Walking Into Doors–A Play by NUS Thespis

p1050517.jpg
Walking Into Doors
a play by Haresh Sharma
directed by Eleine Ng, NUS TS MA student

presented by members of Thespis, featuring TS graduates-turned-practitioners Dwayne Lau & Isabella Chiam.

Hailed as one of Haresh Sharma’s best works, Walking into Doors is an in-your-face exposé of violence in the Singapore home that is intriguing to watch. The thought-provoking and evocative play is composed of humorous and at times ironic vignettes which drives home the message about abuse.

Venue: The Laboratory (level 2) at City Space, Old School, 11B Mount Sophia (behind Cathay; near Dhoby Ghaut MRT)

Dates/ Time: Friday 29 Feb at 8pm and
Saturday 1 March 2008 at 3pm & 8pm

(please dress comfortably)

Tickets: $16

Casting Call!

Thespis’ next project is coming up very soon, as such,  this is a casting call for all who are interested in participating in an upcoming playreading (no acting experience required). The event is in collaboration with local theatre company TheatreWorks, and is a reading of the winning entries of the 24-hour Playwriting Competition held in July this year. This reading will be directed by Theatre Studies honours student Muhammad Ridzal A. Hamid. The actual performance will be on Saturday 10th November, at TheatreWorks’ 72-13. Details of the audition as follows:

Day/Date: Tuesday 23 October 2007

Time: 10am-12pm, 2pm-4pm, 5pm-7pm

Venue: Theatre Studies Practice Studio (AS3 01-01)

No preparation is required – you will be asked to do a cold read of scripts provided during the audition itself.

Please note that as this is a collaboration between TheatreWorks and Thespis, all participants must be Thespis members, hence non-Thespis members are welcome to audition, but must agree to join Thespis if selected to perform. Additionally, participation in this reading is on a purely voluntary basis, and we regret that we are unable to provide remuneration. However, the experience gained will certainly be a valuable one.

If you are interested, please email thespis.tssoc@gmail.com by Monday 22 October, 7pm, with:

1) What time you will be coming

2) Your contact number

For queries or further clarification, please contact Ridzal at 97484597 or Jocelyn at 98328464.

Hope to hear from you soon!
